Quite clear, just confusing.
It made it so a convict would immediately be one of the Executioners.
But even though he’s a volounteer, I guess he still gets paid. Right?

He’ll receive his payment on the condition of his survival. His situation just sucks more than any of the other volunteers’s.
He also makes it clear that Jason would be in his situation had things turned out different. Imagine how insufferable HE’D be in there…
